Accra Court Sentences Woman to One Year Hard Labour Over TikTok Video Insulting President Mahama
The Ghana Police Service has announced the conviction and sentencing of 43-year-old Camila Alhassan to one year imprisonment with hard labour for offensive conduct.
Alhassan, a TikTok content creator, was found guilty by the Accra Circuit Court for publishing offensive, abusive, and derogatory content on social media that targeted President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Mrs. Lordina Mahama.
She was arrested on July 9, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation after police intercepted a TikTok video containing insulting, derogatory remarks, threats against the lives of the President and First Lady, and false allegations concerning the President’s private life. The statements were deemed capable of disturbing public peace and undermining national cohesion.
Alhassan was charged with offensive conduct and false communication. She pleaded guilty in court. Sentencing was initially deferred after she claimed pregnancy, but a medical examination at the Police Hospital confirmed she was not pregnant. On July 16, 2026, the court imposed the one-year sentence with hard labour.
The Ghana Police Service is also proceeding with a separate charge of false communication against her under the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which will be heard at the High Court.
In the press release announcing the outcome, the Service reminded the public that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, this right must be exercised responsibly within the bounds of the law. It stressed that social media is not a platform for spreading falsehoods, issuing threats, or publishing unlawful content, and that violators will face the full rigour of the law.
The case has drawn public attention amid ongoing debates about online speech, accountability, and the responsible use of digital platforms in Ghana.
