Chelsea Complete Signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton
Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract, the Premier League club have confirmed.
Neither Chelsea nor Brighton disclosed the transfer fee for the 35-year-old, who arrives at Stamford Bridge after enjoying one of the most prolific seasons of his career.
Welbeck scored a personal best of 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton during the 2025-26 campaign. Only three English players found the net more often in the league last season.
The former England international becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Speaking after completing the move, Welbeck expressed his excitement about joining the west London club.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride,” he said.
“I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.
“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
Welbeck’s arrival marks a notable shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy under the club’s ownership, which has largely prioritised signing younger players since taking over in 2022.
The experienced forward’s signing also increases competition in Chelsea’s attacking ranks. João Pedro is currently regarded as the club’s first-choice striker, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson also provide options in the centre-forward position.
Welbeck began his professional career at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in a £16 million move in 2014. He spent five seasons with the Gunners before a brief spell at Watford, eventually signing for Brighton in 2020.
On the international stage, Welbeck earned 42 caps for England, scoring 16 goals. His most recent appearance came in 2018, and he was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
