FIFA President Defends Judicial Independence After Lifting Balogun’s Red Card Suspension

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has emphasised the independence of the organisation’s disciplinary bodies following criticism over the decision to lift the automatic suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.

During the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun received a straight red card after video review revealed he had awkwardly landed on an opponent’s ankle. This automatic one-match ban would have sidelined him for the Round of 16 against Belgium.

Reports suggest US President Donald Trump reached out to Infantino requesting a review of the incident. Consequently FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee lifted the ban clearing Balogun to play in the crucial knockout match. This unexpected reversal sparked accusations of external interference.

In a formal response, Infantino emphasised that FIFA’s judicial panels function independently, basing their rulings solely on the rules and evidence presented. He acknowledged receiving the call from Trump, as he does from numerous global leaders regarding various World Cup matters, but clarified that he had explained the ongoing independent process at the time. Infantino acknowledged that while he sometimes agrees or disagrees with decisions he respects them to maintain the sport’s integrity and FIFA’s credibility.

Belgium formally objected to Balogun’s eligibility.  Furthermore some former officials and observers have questioned the timing and implications of the ruling.

Balogun, a key attacker for the US team, is now available for the upcoming clash against Belgium in Seattle.

FIFA maintains that the committee adhered to proper procedures based on the facts presented.
