FIFA vows to improve processes after governance review

FIFA says it will review its internal processes after senior officials acknowledged mistakes in the handling of the withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal.

The governing body’s leadership met in Rabat on Wednesday, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Secretary General Mattias Grafström and members of the FIFA Management Board in attendance.

In a statement, the Management Board reaffirmed its support for Infantino, while the FIFA president reiterated his backing for Grafström and the FIFA administration.

FIFA said discussions focused on improving communication, decision-making and cooperation between the president, secretary general and the Management Board.

The meeting also addressed the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which was withdrawn after criticism over the way it was developed and communicated.

FIFA acknowledged that mistakes had been made during the process, including failing to ensure the FIFA Council and Member Associations felt fully involved. It also admitted errors in its response after details of the proposal were leaked to the media.

The organisation said it had apologised to the FIFA Council and its 211 Member Associations and pledged to ensure similar mistakes are not repeated. A review will now be carried out, with its findings due to be presented at the next FIFA Council meeting.

FIFA confirmed that the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal is no longer under consideration.

The governing body said any such project would have required approval from both the FIFA Council and Member Associations before it could proceed.

While acknowledging shortcomings in the process, FIFA said all actions taken were in compliance with its regulatory framework.

The organisation also said it would take “all necessary measures” to protect its integrity, governance and reputation following the withdrawal of the proposal.

FIFA added that it would continue working with Member Associations, confederations and regional associations to strengthen the FIFA Forward programme and support football development worldwide.
