Ghana Rejects Ramaphosa Visit Amid Xenophobic Attack Concerns
Ghana has declined a state visit from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa originally scheduled for early August. This decision follows the tragic killing of Ghanaian national Bashiru Isak on June 30. Isak, a 40-year-old tailor, was shot dead in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township during anti-immigrant protests.
Ghana condemned the death as linked to xenophobic violence, issued a formal protest, demanded a full investigation and prosecution, and arranged to repatriate Isak’s body. Officials urged Ghanaians in South Africa to stay vigilant.
South Africa disputed the claims, describing the protests as largely peaceful and rejecting any link to xenophobia.
This move underscores tensions regarding migrant safety despite the longstanding strong ties between the nations.
