Ghana won 1-0 against Panama in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L opener at BMO Field on Wednesday. Caleb Yirenkyi scored a stoppage-time header in the 90+5th minute to secure the win in the rain.
The Black Stars overcame a frustrating match against a well-organised Panama and chilly weather to score a late goal and secure a crucial victory. This win gives Ghana a strong start in a competitive group, following England’s earlier 4-2 victory over Croatia.
Ghana’s first half was tough as they struggled on the slippery surface and failed to score. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was injured at half-time and replaced by Benjamin Asare. Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi was given the first yellow card of the game for a foul.
Panama controlled more of the possession but similarly lacked a clinical edge, with few clear opportunities created by either side in a cagey opening period.
Coach Carlos Queiroz’s substitutions of Brandon Thomas-Asante and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku after the hour mark revitalised Ghana’s attack, giving them territorial dominance and creating several dangerous second-half moments. However, Panama’s defence held firm until the end.
In the dying minutes of added time, Ghana’s Yirenkyi rose above the crowd to power a header past the Panama goalkeeper, securing a late winner and sparking wild celebrations among the players and supporters.
The Black Stars’ hard-fought and emotionally charged victory is a testament to their resilience and character. Despite showing promise, Panama will regret not converting their territorial advantages into goals.
Ghana will face England, while Panama faces Croatia in their next Group L fixture. In a tournament where fine margins matter, this stoppage-time winner could be crucial for Ghana’s qualification.
