Late Araújo Equalizer Denies Saudi Arabia Shock Win Over Uruguay

Saudi Arabia held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Miami Stadium on Monday night, 15th June 2026.

The Green Falcons shocked the favourites by taking the lead in the 41st minute with a set-piece goal from Abdulelah Al-Amri.
Uruguay, led by Marcelo Bielsa, dominated possession and created several chances, but a solid Saudi defence and goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais’s vital saves kept them at bay.

Maximiliano Araújo’s equaliser in the 80th minute ensured Uruguay avoided an opening defeat. Despite late pressure, Saudi Arabia secured a valuable point against a higher-ranked opponent.

Uruguay, expecting a strong start, deployed their high-intensity pressing game. However, Saudi Arabia, organised and compact, frustrated them through disciplined shape and quick transitions. The first half belonged largely to the underdogs after Al-Amri’s breakthrough.

The draw leaves Group H evenly poised. Saudi Arabia will take confidence from matching a strong Uruguay side, while Bielsa’s team will reflect on missed chances and the need for greater clinical edge in upcoming games.

Both squads demonstrated qualities that could serve them well as the group stage progresses. Saudi Arabia’s defensive organisation and counter-attacking potential, combined with Uruguay’s attacking depth and experience, suggest intriguing battles ahead.
