President Mahama Orders GH¢300 Million Release for Flood Relief and Mitigation

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the swift release of GH¢300 million from the national Contingency Fund to tackle the impacts of recent severe flooding in Accra and surrounding areas in southern Ghana.

The allocation is split evenly, with GH¢150 million for immediate assistance to displaced residents and affected communities, and another GH¢150 million for measures to reduce future flood risks. The President has also instructed security forces, including the Ghana Armed Forces and Police, to join NADMO and other emergency teams in active rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.

President Mahama, after inspecting the most affected areas, announced further measures to safeguard lives and property amid ongoing flood risks. Heavy rainfall on June 29 caused record water levels in the capital, overwhelming drainage systems and flooding homes, businesses, and major roads. Several communities suffered substantial damage, with residents facing submerged streets and disrupted access to essential services.

Tragically, lives have been lost in the Greater Accra Region and emergency responders are continuing their search and rescue efforts as the full extent of the loss becomes clearer.
