Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has declared Wednesday’s opening Group L match against Panama a “must-win” affair, insisting there is no alternative if the Black Stars hope to make a strong impression at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At the pre-match press conference, the Portuguese veteran left no doubt about the significance of the fixture. “The match is a must-win and the only medicine in football is a must-win,” Queiroz said. He added that his team is determined to seize every chance that arises: “We will take all the opportunities in front of us.”
Queiroz highlighted the importance of the entire squad as the Black Stars finalise preparations. “We are counting on all the 26 players we have in the squad and tomorrow we will make a decision on who starts,” he noted.
When asked about midfielder Thomas Partey, the coach refused to be drawn into the topic. “I will make no comments on issues that has no sense [and] is not part of my business,” he responded.
The encounter at BMO Field represents Ghana’s first step in a demanding group that also features England and Croatia. Having impressed during African qualifying, the four-time African champions are eager to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Panama, competing in just their second World Cup, are expected to offer stubborn resistance in what many see as a key early test for both sides.
With vast experience from previous World Cup campaigns with nations including Portugal and Iran, Queiroz is known for his tactical discipline and ability to get the best out of his players. His clear message ahead of the Panama clash is one of focus, unity and maximum commitment from the entire group.
Ghana will be looking to build momentum with a positive result before facing sterner tests against England and Croatia later in the group phase.
