The Beautiful Game Needs Women at the Table

Why The Future of Football Must Include Women in Leadership

Stadiums roar, nations unite, and millions watch as dreams unfold on the pitch. The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of passion, pride, and possibility. Yet while the world celebrates what happens on the field, another conversation continues behind the scenes; one about leadership, opportunity, and who gets to shape the future of the game.

For decades, the structures that govern football have largely been dominated by men. Women and girls have always loved the game, cheering from the stands, playing on the field, and supporting their teams with unwavering passion. But their voices have not always been present in the rooms where key decisions about the sport are made. That reality is beginning to change.

Across the world, women are stepping into leadership roles within football. They now serve as administrators, strategists, communicators, development professionals, and decision-makers, helping guide one of the most influential sporting institutions in the world.

Tori Penso (2026 FIFA World Cup Center Referee)

Football is not only about what happens during ninety minutes on the pitch. It is a global industry, a cultural force, and a powerful platform that connects communities, shapes identities, and inspires millions. Behind every match are systems of governance, planning, development, marketing, and management that sustain and grow the game. Women must have a seat at the table where those decisions are made.

Serving in football administration has given me a unique vantage point. I have witnessed firsthand the dedication, professionalism, and insight women bring to this industry. Leadership in football demands vision, resilience, and integrity; qualities that are not defined by gender. When women lead, institutions become stronger. New perspectives emerge. The game grows in ways that reflect the diversity of the people who love it.

To every young woman who loves football, whether as a player, a fan, or an aspiring professional, know that there is space for you in this industry. Your passion can become a profession. Football needs administrators, communications professionals, development experts, marketers, analysts, and leaders who understand the heartbeat of the game. The love you have for football can open doors to careers that shape the sport from behind the scenes.

The journey may not always be easy. Entering spaces that have traditionally been male-dominated often demands courage, persistence, and confidence in your abilities. But progress has always been driven by those willing to challenge limitations and expand possibilities.

As the world prepares for another World Cup, we celebrate the brilliance of the players who will step onto the pitch. At the same time, we must inspire the next generation of leaders who will guide football from the boardroom to the grassroots. Young women must see themselves not only in the stadium stands but also at the decision-making tables, in boardrooms, strategy meetings, and leadership roles that shape the direction of the sport. boardrooms, strategy meetings, and leadership roles that shape the direction of the sport.
Because the beautiful game belongs to everyone.
And when women are present at the table where decisions are made, football becomes stronger, more inclusive, and better prepared for the future.
The future of football will not be shaped by players alone.

It will also be shaped by leadership.
And women must be part of that leadership.
