WAFCON 2026: Nigeria Hit Egypt Six to Storm into Quarter-finals
Defending champions Nigeria delivered their most emphatic performance of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026, dismantling Egypt 6-2 on Wednesday night to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The Super Falcons showcased their attacking quality at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, overwhelming the Female Pharaohs with a ruthless display that underlined their credentials as title contenders.
Nigeria took the lead in the 21st minute when Asisat Oshoala calmly converted from the penalty spot. Esther Mondaydoubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time before Uchenna Kanu extended the lead to 3-0 shortly after the restart.
The champions maintained their relentless pressure as Christy Ucheibe converted another penalty in the 81st minute, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade added a fifth from the spot in stoppage time. Omewa completed the rout with Nigeria’s sixth goal in the ninth minute of added time.
Egypt showed resilience despite the heavy defeat, with Ghazi scoring twice. She pulled one back from the penalty spot deep into first-half stoppage time before grabbing her second goal in the 84th minute.
Nigeria’s commanding victory confirmed their progression from Group C and ensured the nine-time African champions advanced to the knockout phase with momentum firmly on their side.
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of another continental crown and a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
