EFL Expels Southampton from Play-Offs in Spygate Ruling
The English Football League (EFL) has expelled Southampton from the Championship play-off final following a disciplinary ruling on spying allegations.
The decision stems from charges that a Southampton analyst spied on Middlesbrough’s training session ahead of their semi-final tie. Southampton had advanced past Middlesbrough 2-1 on aggregate but will now be removed from the Wembley final against Hull City, with Middlesbrough reinstated in their place.
The independent commission found Southampton in breach of EFL regulations regarding good faith and observing rival training sessions within 72 hours of a match. In addition to expulsion, the club faces a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 Championship season. Southampton has the right to appeal.
Middlesbrough described the expulsion as “the only appropriate response” to deter future violations. The scandal has overshadowed the promotion play-offs, which carry significant financial implications for reaching the Premier League.
This marks a dramatic development for Southampton, who were among the favorites for promotion following relegation from the Premier League.
