Porn, Betting Sites in Ghana’s Top 5 – CSA Report

The old revelation by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) that pornographic and sports betting websites rank among the top five most visited categories continues to make waves, even in 2026.

Back in October 2022, the then-acting Director-General of the CSA, Albert Antwi-Boasiako, made the disclosure during an interview on Asaase Radio’s Breakfast Show. He noted that as more Ghanaians gained access to the internet, traffic to betting platforms and adult content shot up significantly.

Four years later, the statement is being widely shared again on social media, sparking fresh debates. Recent web traffic data shows that while Google, YouTube, and Facebook still dominate overall rankings, betting sites like SportyBet remain firmly in the top ten. Pornographic sites are less visible in public top lists but are believed to attract substantial private traffic.

With internet users in Ghana now exceeding 24 million, concerns remain high. Authorities worry about increased exposure to malware, phishing scams, financial losses from betting, and addiction among the youth. Many observers tie the popularity of betting to economic hardships and limited job opportunities for young people.

In response, the CSA and the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations are pushing for stronger measures. These include age verification systems on pornographic websites to protect minors, alongside calls for better digital literacy and parental oversight.

As Ghana’s digital space grows rapidly, finding the right balance between freedom and safety online remains a major challenge for policymakers and society.
This conversation, it seems, is far from over.
