“We Want UG Degrees” – AUCB Final-Year Students Reject New Institutional Certificates
Final-year students at the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB), formerly the African University College of Communications (AUCC), have strongly rejected management’s decision to award them degrees from the newly chartered independent university.
The students, admitted during the 2022/2023 academic year under AUCB’s affiliation agreement with the University of Ghana, argue that they were assured UG degrees upon completion. They contend that issuing AUCB degrees would breach the original terms of admission and potentially reduce the value and recognition of their qualifications in the job market and for further studies.
In a joint statement, the students emphasised: “We were admitted under the University of Ghana affiliation and have pursued our entire programme under that system. We therefore expect to graduate with University of Ghana degrees as originally promised.”
AUCB was granted a Presidential Charter in December 2024, conferring full autonomy as a degree-awarding institution. The transition from an affiliated college to an independent university has created this impasse for students nearing the end of their studies.
University management has not yet issued an official response to the students’ concerns. The development reflects broader challenges faced by private tertiary institutions in Ghana as they move from affiliation arrangements to independent status while honouring commitments made to existing students.
