Funding Crisis Threatens Ghana Sports Growth – GOC President Appeals for Urgent Support

Ghana’s sports development is hindered by inadequate and delayed government funding, according to GOC President at the Annual General Assembly.

Despite successful 2025 campaigns, the Committee struggled to prepare athletes adequately for major events and now faces the dual challenge of readying teams for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympic Games without confirmed funding. The President made a passionate appeal to government for timely release of budgeted funds and urged corporate Ghana to extend support beyond football to Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

He proposed a structured system of fixed annual grants to federations based on Olympic or non-Olympic status to ensure fairness and transparency within the next three years. The President also called on all federation leaders to champion the new Sports Fund, describing it as a potential game changer if managed with transparency.

The address stressed that broader support would create opportunities for young athletes across the country, from Gambaga to Keta, who excel in diverse disciplines beyond football.
