Ghana Tennis Team Risks Demotion as Federation Seeks Sponsorship
The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) has asked for financial help to allow the national teams to compete in international tournaments, warning that not participating could lead to demotion.
Ghana faces the risk of losing its places in the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions if it fails to field teams for the 2026 Africa Zone events. The Davis Cup ties are in Nairobi, Kenya, in June, and the Billie Jean King Cup in Gaborone, Botswana, in July.
Yao Boni, Secretary of the Ghana Tennis Federation, emphasised the challenges, particularly the lack of funding, as a barrier to participation. Despite efforts to sustain tennis development, the country has faced limited government and corporate backing in recent years.
Tennis officials are urging corporate organisations, individuals and government stakeholders to offer sponsorship and logistical support. Participation in these regional events is crucial for maintaining Ghana’s competitive edge in African tennis and giving local players a chance to gain international recognition.
The GTF has faced funding challenges before but the current situation highlights the urgent need for sustainable investment in the sport.
