WAFCON 2026: Tanzania Shock South Africa with Late Winner

Tanzania produced one of the opening shocks of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, defeating 2022 champions South Africa 2-1 in a dramatic Group B encounter at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.

The East Africans stunned Banyana Banyana with a late winner to claim a statement victory against one of the tournament’s leading contenders and make an emphatic start to their campaign.

Diana Msewa gave Tanzania the lead in the 37th minute, capitalising on a strong spell of pressure to put her side in front.

South Africa responded before the interval, with defender Bambanani Mbane rising highest to power home a header and restore parity heading into half-time.

With the contest finely poised, Tanzania delivered the decisive blow three minutes from full time. Hasnath Ubamba embarked on a superb solo run before keeping her composure to finish clinically and seal a memorable 2-1 victory.
