Owusu: “I Strongly Deny These Allegations” Over World Cup Selection Claims

Ghana international forward Prince Osei Owusu has firmly rejected social media allegations claiming that members of his family demanded 70% of his earnings or bonuses as a condition for his selection to the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement shared on his verified Instagram account on Tuesday, the 29-year-old CF Montréal striker dismissed the claims as entirely unfounded.

“The claims that individuals pretending to be members of my family have stated that I would have to give away 70% of any earnings or bonuses if I were selected for the FIFA World Cup are completely false,” Owusu said. “These are fake news, and I strongly deny these allegations.”

Owusu, who was born in Germany to Ghanaian parents and made his senior debut for the Black Stars in November 2025, expressed continued pride in representing his country despite not being included in the final squad for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“I have always been proud to represent my home country, Ghana, and I remain fully committed to my nation,” he stated. “It has always been an honor to wear the national team jersey.”

He added: “Of course, I would have loved to be part of the World Cup squad. Unfortunately, it did not happen this time, but that does not change my commitment or respect for Ghana and its national team.”

The player went on to distance himself and his family from the circulating rumors.

“I completely reject and distance myself from all false statements, rumors, and misleading claims being made in my name or on behalf of my family,” Owusu wrote. “Thank you to everyone who continues to support me and respects the truth.”

The controversy surfaced after unverified claims suggested external pressures influenced squad decisions.

Owusu’s response aims to clarify the situation and refocus attention on his dedication to the national team.
