UAE Sends Emergency Humanitarian Assistance to Ghana to Support Communities Hit by Deadly June 29 Floods
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched an emergency humanitarian relief operation to support thousands of people affected by Ghana’s devastating June 29 floods.
The intervention, announced by UAE Times in a Facebook post on Thursday, July 23, is being carried out on the directives of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and coordinated through the UAE Aid Agency.
The relief package includes essential food supplies and emergency shelter materials for thousands of flood-affected families, as the UAE seeks to help ease the humanitarian burden created by the disaster.
The UAE said the initiative reflects its longstanding commitment to humanitarian assistance and rapid disaster response, while reaffirming its support for communities affected by natural disasters around the world.
The June 29 floods, triggered by hours of torrential rainfall, caused widespread devastation across parts of the Greater Accra, Volta and Central regions. Communities were submerged, homes and businesses destroyed, and critical public infrastructure severely damaged.
Official figures indicate that more than 131,000 people were affected, with 45 fatalities recorded and nearly 40,000 residents displaced. Thousands of families remain in need of urgent assistance, including food, temporary shelter, clean water and other essential supplies.
The UAE’s intervention is expected to complement relief efforts being led by the Government of Ghana, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), development partners and humanitarian agencies working to provide immediate assistance and support the recovery of affected communities.
The latest support also adds to a long history of international assistance to Ghana during major disasters and humanitarian emergencies. Over the years, countries including the UAE, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan and members of the European Union, alongside United Nations agencies and other international humanitarian organisations, have contributed financial aid, emergency supplies, medical assistance and technical expertise in response to floods, disease outbreaks and other crises.
The UAE has also expanded its humanitarian engagement across Africa in recent years, supporting emergency relief operations as well as initiatives in healthcare, education and infrastructure through its various aid institutions.
Its latest intervention in Ghana proves the deepening humanitarian and development cooperation between the two countries and provides additional support to communities still grappling with the devastating impact of the floods.
