WAFCON 2026: Black Queens’ Malawi Friendly Victory Was Our Best Game in Camp

Ghana’s Black Queens have received a timely boost ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with head coach Kim Lars Björkegren describing the team’s final pre-tournament friendly against Malawi as their best performance since the start of camp.

The Black Queens closed their preparations with a convincing victory over Malawi, delivering an encouraging display as they put the finishing touches to their preparations for the continental tournament in Morocco.

Björkegren, who has been working to improve the team’s tactical discipline, attacking efficiency and overall cohesion since taking charge, was pleased with the progress shown by his players.

Speaking after the match in an interview, the Swedish coach expressed his satisfaction with both the performance and the result.

“This is the best game we have played in this camp so far, and you can see it in the performance and the result. We keep building from here,” Björkegren said.

The victory comes at an important stage of Ghana’s preparations, offering the team valuable momentum as attention now shifts fully towards the WAFCON finals.

Björkegren has repeatedly stressed the importance of creating and converting chances, with the Black Queens showing signs of improvement in attack during their recent warm-up fixtures.

Reflecting on an earlier meeting with Malawi, the coach had praised his side’s ability to create opportunities while acknowledging the need for greater efficiency in front of goal.

“We are creating so many chances… we could have scored six or seven. The most important thing is to win, play well and create chances, and this was a big step in the right direction,” he said.

The latest performance will therefore be welcomed by the technical team as evidence of the progress made during the team’s training camp. With improved attacking fluency, greater cohesion and increased confidence, the Black Queens appear to be heading into the tournament with growing belief.
