Zelenskyy Replaces Ukraine Army Chief Amid Wartime Leadership Shake-Up

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has replaced army chief General Oleksandr Syrskyi with General Mykhailo Drapatyi, deepening a leadership shake-up as Kyiv faces pressure over military strategy and defence reforms.

The move follows the dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which sparked public criticism and rare wartime protests over the direction of Ukraine’s military.

The changes have exposed tensions over how quickly Ukraine should modernise its armed forces, particularly through greater use of drones, technology and data-driven warfare.

Fedorov, 35, had championed rapid military innovation, while the 60-year-old Syrskyi favoured a more traditional approach centred on conventional forces and artillery.

Syrskyi had defended his strategy, warning against attempting to transform Ukraine’s million-strong army overnight.

Drapatyi, 43, a battle-tested commander, pledged to lead the armed forces responsibly and with respect for those defending the country.

Zelenskyy thanked Syrskyi for his service, including his role in defending Kyiv, while stressing that Ukraine’s overriding goal remained victory over Russia and conditions that could force Moscow towards peace.

The reshuffle comes as Ukraine seeks to accelerate weapons production, expand drone capabilities, strengthen air defences and reform its military structure.

The new leadership will face the challenge of modernising the armed forces while maintaining battlefield effectiveness and public confidence amid the continuing war.
