Mexico Kick Off 2026 World Cup in Style with 2-0 Victory Over South Africa

Mexico launched the 2026 FIFA World Cup in commanding fashion, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday night.

The co-hosts dominated proceedings from the outset in front of a capacity crowd, repeating their strong start against the same opponents from the 2010 opener though this time securing a decisive victory rather than a draw.

Julián Quiñones scored a clinical goal in the ninth minute, following a precise through ball from Erik Lira, to give Mexico a dream start. The early goal energised the home supporters and set a tone that South Africa struggled to match throughout the evening.

Despite some counter-attacking efforts, the visitors couldn’t create meaningful chances. Their challenge worsened in the 49th minute when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for a reckless foul. South Africa’s woes were compounded when substitute Themba Zwane was also sent off in the 82nd minute for a second bookable offence, leaving Bafana Bafana with nine players.

Mexico capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado’s dangerous cross from the right flank was headed in by Raúl Jiménez, doubling the lead and securing the result. However, Mexico faced disciplinary issues as defender Johan Vásquez received a red card in the 75th minute for a professional foul on a South African attacker, leaving them ten players for the final stages.

Despite the challenging high-altitude conditions, the hosts maintained control of possession and tempo, showcasing defensive solidity and clinical finishing.

This victory provides Mexico with a strong foundation in Group A, enabling them to advance further in the tournament on their home soil.
