Thomas Partey Denied Visa to Canada, Ruled Out of Ghana’s World Cup Opener

Villarreal CF midfielder, Thomas Partey, will miss Ghana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being denied entry into Canada, sources have told The Athletic.

Ghana are scheduled to face Panama on Wednesday, June 17, at BMO Field in Toronto. However, Partey will not travel with the squad or feature in the Group-stage fixture due to Canadian immigration restrictions related to his ongoing legal situation in the United Kingdom.

According to the Canadian government’s official guidelines, individuals who have committed or been convicted of a crime may be inadmissible to the country. Although Partey has not been convicted and denies the charges against him, he has been formally charged and is awaiting trial. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that these circumstances have resulted in his exclusion from entry.

The development represents a significant blow to the Black Stars, who were counting on the experienced 32-year-old central midfielder as a key part of their squad in what will be their first World Cup appearance since 2022. Partey has been a mainstay for Ghana in recent years, bringing pedigree and leadership to the national team.

Ghana’s coaching staff and federation officials are now expected to adjust their preparations and squad logistics ahead of the tournament opener.
